The Northampton Bank Robbery, which took place on January 25, 1876, involved five masked men entering the home of John Whittelsey, the chief cashier of the Northampton National Bank. After defeating and restraining Whittelsey and others in the house, the robbers demanded the keys and vault combination. Despite Whittelsey's resistance, he was subjected to brutal physical abuse until he finally surrendered the information. The robbers escaped, leaving behind a significant loss of money and securities. The investigation led to the involvement of the Pinkerton Agency, and through a series of letters and negotiations, they identified the perpetrators.
