In this part of the story, a woman discovers a large sum of money in her possession, which turns out to be part of the stolen funds from the American Exchange Bank Robbery. The husband instructs her to refer the man claiming the money back to him. Later, it's revealed that the man in question, Crawford, had a stormy encounter with his uncle, who refused to give him the money until convinced of its rightful ownership. Crawford's friend, a man about town, also demanded the money. Suspicion arose about Crawford's involvement in the bank robbery. Detectives traced Crawford to Central America, where a complex series of events unfolded, involving a deceitful family relation, a valise left in a store-room, and a safety-deposit box.
